Pleistocene archaeological assemblages have long resisted all attempts at accurate chronological classifications as we considered the components of these palimpsests as synchronie elements in their stratigraphical formation. A corollary of a typological vision of archaeological facts, this chronological compression became inconsistent when we began to interpret Palaeolithic industrial assemblages as the result of the dynamic accumulation of remains and gestures of technical activity. Linked to the concept of "chaîne opératoire", the notion of "technical time" gave the keys to identify and understand discontinuities in the formation of assemblages.
